Good day! I have the need for an Application Engineer – Linux in the Kansa City area. I don’t need a Sys Admin, I need a Linux Engineer heavy on the application side. Phone and possible Skype hire.

Preferred Skills - Railroad experience would be a BIG PLUS
Basic Qualifications -
Position Requirements
• Bachelor’s Degree in Science and/or Technology Discipline
Required Experience
• 10+ in technology related field. Railroad Industry definite plus.
• 3+ years of Linux - Intermediate to Senior Level (Messaging)
• 3+ years of operating as a System Administration/Application Administration at an Intermediate to Senior level
• 3+ years Intermediate level understanding of Network engineering (VLANS, traffic optimization, etc)
• Basic understanding of GPS / NMEA 183
• Systems Integration (move to experience)
• 3+ years working in a VMWare Environment

Preferred Experience Information
• Understanding of KCS or other Railroad Operational Processes as it relates to Locomotive, Signal and Communication processes.
• Intermediate to senior level LINUX administrator
• Advanced Systems/software engineering experience with complex scripting abilities. Efficient use of Python, KSH/korn shell or other open source scripting languages.
• Remote imaging and configurations of Linux devices including remote RHEL OS load
• Experience with Clustering and High Availability Design
o RedHat Clustering
o AMQP clustering
• In-depth knowledge of the configuration practices
• Experience working with data interchange and data management (i.e. ETL processes, database interaction)
• Basic understanding of GIS practices
• Debugging within a complex environment that includes multiple connected devices
• Encryption protocols (i.e. HMAC, SHA1, AES, block ciphering)
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate cross-functional small work teams toward task completion
• Demonstrated effective analytical and problem solving skills
• Professional written and verbal communication skills within the team environment
• Ability to work effectively within a variety of solutions
• Desire to work in an environment with undefined elements where trial and error is common

Job Description -
The Application Engineer (AE) will be dedicated to the Positive Train Control (PTC) initiative supporting the development, configuration and implementation of key PTC applications and their infrastructure. This position will work with a small group of Application Engineers supporting the same goals of PTC delivery. The willingness to learn new applications are critical to the success of this role. The ability to work within a flexible, changing environment is a must as we are often learning by trial and error, proof of concept and detailed analysis.

Job Duties
• Design, Configuration, installation and support for various PTC equipment components from different vendors in various testing labs that may include:
o Messaging services on locomotive and waysides
o Back office messaging servers
o Back office applications used for Locomotive control
• Imaging strategy research for new devices and its implementation
• Identify and implement ways to install/support applications over IP
• Enable an infrastructure to combine labs and create a back office environment to provide common application services where needed
• Determine field deployment and configuration procedures for devices (procedures, install guides, etc)
• Provide Field validation support for configuration and communication of devices
• Work with Communications to support build, maintenance and operations
• Support Locomotive message server
• Support device/laptop configuration for field and labs ( we should work to move to helpdesk)
• Development of Script/automate systems management/logging and alerting
• Create support infrastructure for NOC or support personnel (internal)
• Provide Technical Support for TMC, WMS, WIU in the Lab environment
• Provide Technical Support for Lab Setup and Support (Shreveport, KC, etc.)
• Work with Data Center Services and Communications for Network related tasks
• Support the development team with connectivity and access to virtual and physical devices for the different type of equipment.
