Job Description: Are you interested in building tools to study our planet and support the people living on it? Our project helps sailors navigate through ice-laden waters near Alaska, scientists to study the air quality over Indonesia, first responders managing fires in California, and ice skaters in Sweden looking for a frozen pond.

Our team supports NASA’s Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS - ) located at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC - ) facility, “home to the nation's largest organization of scientists, engineers and technologists who build spacecraft, instruments and new technology to study Earth, the sun, our solar system, and the universe.”

In particular, we provide architecture and operations support for the Global Imagery Browse Service (GIBS) ( GIBS is an open-source ( web service designed with the goal of advancing user interactions with NASA’s Earth Observing Science Data and Information Systems’ (EOSDIS) inter-disciplinary data through enhanced visual representation and discovery. On a daily basis, thousands of users explore the past and present state of our dynamic planet to support a wide range of activities. Our goal is to enable this exploration and discovery.

Required Qualifications:

B.S. degree in computer science or related field and 5 years’ experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
1-2 years’ experience in an Application Support, Production Support, or Software Development role
Excellent diagnostic, debugging, and problem solving skills
Strong testing skills
Apache Server, Map server
Experience with API and Web Mapping Services (WMS), Web Map Tile Services (WMTS), Google Earth KML, etc.
Ability to manage code libraries and use repositories (git) for consistent management of work
Understanding of servers, networks, security in a Linux environment
Strong writing skills for creating technical documentation
Strong ability to communicate effectively in-person, through chat, and email
Must be able to read and understand code (i.e., Python, Java, Groovy)
Cloud technology experience a plus
Basic experience with an object-oriented language and database queries (i.e., MySQL or PostgreSQL) desired
Continuous Integration Experience (Bamboo, Jenkins/Hudson, Maven) a plus
