The future of your IT career depends pivotally on your rational decision-making. As our mind is usually stuffed with multiple things, decision-making can be a confusing and challenging step in a stressful situation. Sometimes, IT professionals hesitate while taking important decisions because they fear what a wrong decision will lead to. Here are 10 steps that will guide an IT professional in his rational decision-making:

Go by the Facts: It is better to follow facts rather than going by intuition, and decision can only be taken based on the analysis. This type of decision-making requires detailed research and the best option should be chosen. IT organizations prefer rational decision-making as they can base their decision on fact-based analysis.

Be Intuitive: When it is difficult to obtain facts, go by your intuitions. Try to judge by your instinct what will be effective for your organization in future. There can be underlying risks but you should be bold enough as an IT professional to carry on with your decision.

Assess the Decision: It is significant to study the consequences of the decision. An IT professional should possess clear idea about its effects, whether profitable, loss or neutral. He should think about different options if any flaw is found.

Risk Analysis: It is a vital factor in your decision-making process. If the risk is overestimated, you may lose good opportunities and redeem your chances of success. On the other hand, if the risk is underestimated, the organization may suffer severe loss.

Prepare Alternatives: A good IT professional always prepares possible alternatives so that he can use those whenever needed. He should think about the outcomes of each alternative. If his decision goes wrong, he should be foresighted enough to try with the best alternative in the right time.

Pace: Don’t take too long in decision-making; it may lead to loss of good opportunities for your organization. Other IT organizations acting fast may take the benefit of your late decision. A proficient IT professional should act fast even in stressful situations.

Gain Information: Good decision can only be taken when an IT professional acquires enough information about the matter. Gaining information increases your knowledge and opens your perception to various matters.

Put Aside Ego and Feelings: In order to perceive a rational decision, you should isolate your decision from your personal ego and issues. An IT professional should not engross himself too deep into the problem; rather he should try to scrutinize the problem objectively to solve it with a better decision. Your decision should only be made for the benefit of the organization.

Take Advice: A responsible IT professional always discusses the problem with his seniors or with experts at any point of confusion. He should not be hesitant in asking their assistance. Instead, their opinions can boost his confidence; sometimes help him to arrive into better decisions.

Take Charge: When you’re sure of your decision and nobody in the team is taking charge, it’s time then to step forward and lead. Implement your decision with confidence. Your boldness will be the key to your success of IT career.
